The Caribbean is a melting pot of culture with great food, music, and talented people! One of those talented people is Mission Catwalk alum, David Rolles’ success garnered both local and international recognition in the Fashion Industry. David recently debuted his Raphelita line at NYFW Fall 2018 and The Haute Lifestyle caught up with the Designer.
THP: Tell us about the collection you showed at NYFWD.R: RAPHELITA by David Rolle (the brand) Raphelita is a Bahamian Fashion brand that celebrates island luxury. Our customer enjoys living her best life and looking effortlessly chic while doing so. After our first collection in 2010, we’ve evolved into a brand influenced by the simple life around us. Come live the Palm Life.
Raffie (the collection) Great-grandmother to designer David Rolle was the inspiration behind his brand’s name, Raphelita. She was called Raffie by her family. In a very personal collection, David was inspired by things that remind him of his great-grandmother. Calm shades of blues, greens, and florals dance softly in unison.
THP: What inspired the collection?D.R: Pretty much my small island upbringing. While as I mentioned my clothing speaks to resort wear it has a quality of big city glam. I wanted to present my favorite things to put a woman in.
THP: Was this your 1st time showing at NYFW?tell us how you felt going in?D.R: This was indeed my first time showing at NYFW. I was excited to share with the Fashion capital what we as island people have to offer. I really wanted to know what kind of reception I’d get. I guess I wanted to know if they would agree with the rest of the fashion block. Would I really be seen as a talent to watch?
I felt the need to take with me not only designs by other artist but to use models from both Jamaica and The Bahamas. CLW designs provided custom jewelry for my look and Harl Taylor BAG created a collection of Handbags to accompany my designs.
THP: What would you want people to be “the takeaway” from the collection?D.R: I want people to be able to build their own conclusions … Fashion like art is subjective and while I have my own inspiration behind my collection, I’d want it to be personal for everyone.
While I try to convey a luxurious Island feel I never want to box my collection in to just being resort wear. If a lady feels beautiful in my clothing I’ve pretty much done my job.
THP: What can people expect from you in coming months?D.R: I’ve got so much going on but back to reality Television seems to be the direction I’m being pulled into. I love competing so I’d love to do other designer based reality shows.
THP: Where can we find your pieces?D.R: Currently anyone can order via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. I’d be happy to send look books to interested persons. I’m also on Instagram @myraphelita.
