Why we might delete our Instagram Account

Instagram is a haven where superficiality lives

It hit me like a ton of bricks last night -- "I need to delete my Instagram account for the Blog and obviously my personal account". I remember watching an episode of "Black Mirror" in a world where people were ranked by how many followers they had and only got certain things based on that like where they get to live, work and even marry. The main character got crazy (literally) documenting evey aspect of her life and trying to fit in. I then realized this must have been an exaggerated version of what Instagram is today.

Black Mirror - Season 3

Yup, I a millennial is seriously contemplating deleting my Instagram account simply because it adds no value to my life. We (me) have not posted in over a month and it literally has not been on the top of my mind. Thing is, I have a job and a life + a blog and many other things I'm trying to really get up and running and constantly posting pictures and quotes are quite daunting and definitely not on the top of my list. There are certain norms and social constructs portrayed by Instagram that gives us an idea of perfection that often not only heightens our insecurities but slowly leads us into depression. Isn't it weird how many people got lip injections because Kylie Jenner decides it cool? Isn't it weird how all females look alike? Same hair, make-up clothing, and lifestyle-- so much so that if a person is missing it's hard to pick her out of a crowd as they all look like manufactured robots -- sighs. It's all too much!

Instagram is one of my stressors, I find my self constantly scrolling through photos of people (for no reason) who are only showing the good side of things professing to be living their best lives -- I know some of these people and they are for sure not living any type of life and the fakeness of this is all quite stressful. How can I see you sitting in the cafe right beside me in Kingston, then your Instagram photo shows a photo of you (in Madrid) living it up? It makes no sense, I can literally see you right there!

Deleting my Instagram just feels like the right thing to do now and I've actually been thinking about it for a while but last night the feeling was strong! It's like one extra un-necessary thing I have to think about and it would just be easier to let it go. Based on our statistics, Instagram is one of the places we get the least traffic and the least business interactions -- people are always begging for a free service or pictures rather than wanting to pay for the same.

Sure Social Media is a great way to connect with the rest of the world, get information in real time and promoting but this generation has turned it into something dark.

The account will officially be deleted next Friday but we will continue on Facebook where we first started.
