What’s in The Bag – A Minimalist’s Beauty and Fashion Haul

Let me preface this by saying that, while I love Sydney and think it’s one of the most majestic cities on the planet, when it comes to my style preferences, if you ran into me on the street, you would probably peg me as a bona fide Melbourne gal. I used to be a goth in my teenage years, and even though I don’t frame my eyes with a black eye pencil – once a goth girl, always a goth girl. So, just like our super-stylish sisters from Melbourne, I mostly rock black, which I can tell you right now has its perks and disadvantages. The perk is – all your clothes mesh well together so it never takes me long to get ready, but finding what I want can be like climbing Mount Everest because in the sea of black garments, finding the one you want can be quite frustrating, especially when you’re in a hurry. When it comes to makeup and skincare, I like to keep things on the minimal side as well so the items from my latest haul won’t come as a surprise, now that you know a bit about me. So, let’s take a sneak peek into my bag and see which additions I’ve made to my collection.

Dress up

You’ve all probably seen the button-down striped dresses at Zara. Yes, there is a sea of florals going on in there right now, but since that’s really not my cup of tea and I went for the black and white striped one. The thing I love about it the most is that you can wear a black turtleneck underneath and even ankle boots with tights during the colder seasons, and still be able to rock a dress that isn’t made from a sturdy ‘winterish’ fabric. The length is perfect, plus, the stripes allow me to channel those resort collection vibes which are loaded with stripes without compromising my sense of style. It was quite affordable as well, it can be rocked from summer to winter, and stripes never go out of style, so even if you’re a minimalist like me, you can still look trendy while maintaining your style persona intact.

Accessorize and empower

Even though I resemble a Melbourne gal, in my heart, I’m a true Sydney woman, which means that my desire to ‘boho things up’ sometimes gets the best of me. This has been a season during which everyone went nuts over those round rattan bags, and I was no exception. They’re just the right amount of bohemian, but still structured enough that I can rock them with my minimalistic pieces and just spice things up a bit. Now, there are tons of sellers of these bags, but when I came across this small brand called Woven Sand, I was sold. Their bags aren’t much different from the others you see online, but I loved the story behind them. Namely, they’re hand-crafted by female artisans from Bali, where the bags and stunning straw hats are made, and the goal is to empower these young women, so the feminist in me was sold. On top of that, I found out that the founder of the brand is an Aussie, so it was like purchasing local goods. Each bag has a different lining, which I love as it makes it even more unique. It’s small, round, sturdy, and granted, it can’t fit plenty of items, but for a breezy afternoon, it’s sheer boho perfection.

Old-school gal

Although I love how some of the new and trendy frames look on other people, I found a frame that’s perfect for my face shape a long time ago, so I always stick to my old and faithful Ray-Bans, and of course, I get my favorite sunglasses in Sydney, because there’s no reason to roam around once you know exactly where to look. Mine are simple and black – no surprise there, and the lenses provide UV protection, which is incredibly important to me, as I don’t leave the house without slathering my body and face in sunblock. Not only do I burn easily, but the tanned look just doesn’t work for me so I work hard to keep my pale complexion protected, and the specs protect my eyes, and since I don’t usually wear much makeup on a daily basis, I can just put on my sunglasses, my SPF lip balm – recently I’ve been loving the Kiehl's Butterstick Lip Treatment which I snagged during a particularly long wait at a Turkish airport, and am already planning on stocking up because it doesn’t only protect the lips, but gives a perfect rosy-red tint, amazing for no-makeup days.

The makeup extravaganza

As I said, I don’t wear a lot of makeup, nor do I wear it frequently, but I was just finishing a bottle of a disappointing foundation and was in the market for something really good. Then, one day I came across this article that raved about Rihanna’s new makeup brand – Fenty Beauty and is a fierce advocate for inclusivity, I was impressed and intrigued. Still, I didn’t want to splurge on a celebrity-made makeup without taking it for a test drive, so I headed down to my nearest Sephora and asked to test it out. I was shook! It blends so well, stays on for hours without budging and you don’t even need a concealer because this baby covers it all. To say that I love it would be an understatement – I am nuts about it.

Now, I blame Jeffree Star for splurging on the brush as well, because it does really give you more of that blurred airbrushed effect than when you use the foundation with a sponge. However, I did not stop there. Yes, I said I don’t wear a lot of makeup, but my pale complexion loves a touch of that peachy-pink flush and that’s exactly what I found in the Shimmer Skinstick in Yacht Lyfe. You can apply and blend it with your fingers, add a coat of mascara and do a soft-focused red lip that’s been dominating the runways and you’re good to go. These products get a 10 out of 10 from me, I’m just in awe of them every time I apply them, and I sincerely recommend Fenty Beauty, because they’ve truly changed the beauty game.
