How To Save a Life

Good Morning Guys!

We here at Haute People are about well... "The People" and we felt it necessary to do a different type of post today. Today's post is about suicide as it's been sweeping the national here in Jamaica as a subtle epidemic. We will try our best to break things down as best as we can and be as transparent as possible. This is a longer read than what you are used to because we want to ensure we leave you as informed as possible.

Jamaican Entertainer "Delus" whose given name is Delmark Spence committed suicide just a few days ago after allegedly sending a cryptic video to his girlfriend alluding to his death. We say that to say this people no matter what we are going through be nice to people! You never know what people are going through and YOU just might be "The Straw that broke the Camel's Back " . Let's talk about Depression since it's one of the leading factors of depression. Click Here to read touching Social Media post from his brother "Konshens" .

Depression (major depressive disorder or clinical depression) is a common but serious mood disorder. It causes severe symptoms that affect how you feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working. To be diagnosed with depression, the symptoms must be present for at least two weeks.
Some forms of depression are slightly different, or they may develop under unique circumstances, such as:
  • Persistent depressive disorder (also called dysthymia) is a depressed mood that lasts for at least two years. A person diagnosed with persistent depressive disorder may have episodes of major depression along with periods of less severe symptoms, but symptoms must last for two years to be considered persistent depressive disorder.

If you think you might be depressed and having suicidal thoughts... it is very important for you to talk to someone .. anyone. There must be at least one person you can talk to whether its a friend , family member , Health Professional or even a Pastor. Talking to any of these people might offer you a new perspective about whatever you are going through and you might even find that what you consider a mountain of a problem might be a molehill to someone else looking in. All you have to do is talk ... depression has no face , age , race or social background. For the most part it's a chemical imbalance in the brain and body that can attack anyone.

Here are a few Ways you can help someone that you think or know that might be depressed

  1. Warning Signs: No matter what people say, there are always warning signs. If people who are always happy and outgoing suddenly become distant and anti-social you definitely need to look into that. Other signs include: Talking about Killing or Harming oneself , talking or writing alot about death or dying , Seeking things that could help with death such as weapons and medications, alcohol dependence. Another subtle yet dangerous sign is hopelessness; if the person constantly talks about giving up on life and they've had enough ... you need to look into that.
  2. Confront the Situation: If you realize that a person you know might have any of these signs , it's important that you ask them if they might be contemplating suicide. Be as honest and outright as possible as possible without being harsh.
  3. Get Help: Seek help of a professional person. If it means that you have to commit the person to a special program , do it! You might just save their life.
  4. Change the Environment : Remember in Final Destination when the lead character locked herself in a white padded room that was completely empty? If you can get the person out of a dangerous environment , then do so.
  5. Follow Up: Don't assume that once you've followed the steps above the person is magically cured , Depression does not go away over time. Genuinely follow up and genuinely care!

We live in such a Narcissistic world where people are about themselves and selfies. People , while we might be responsible for ourselves you can give some love to other people too. Don't wait until a person commits suicide for you to come and give a life history on how well you knew the person and you don't understand why because they were do happy. You saw the signs but you were too busy to notice or care.

Please comment below if you can offer any tips or maybe you were suicidal yourself and got help ( We won't judge )
