Bye, Bye Henri Bendel | A Jamaican's View on Henri Bendel Closing Down

"Henri Bendel is closing after 123 years in Business" were the words I read in astonishment after reading through an article on CNN Business.

Prior to now, I had known nothing about this brand until I watched Clueless in the 90s when Cher was upset with her maid about not being able to find her Designer pieces after pairing a tres chic plaid skirt over a sheer white top. It was then I knew what a luxury designer brand was as these were not things high on the list of priorities in Jamaica at that time. The brand is known for it's black /brown and white stripes as well as beautiful Designer Handbags, Fashion Jewelry & Accessories.

The article went on to say the company that carries the brand will be closing its stores due to sluggish sales and will now focus on other brands like Victorias Secret and Bath and Body Works. Imagine that-- a luxury brand is making fewer sales than underwear and cosmetics brands; I bet in the 90s people would have never dreamed this would happen but this is where the world is heading.

This immediately got me to thinking -- the world is changing and if we are not ready or a part of this change, we will be left behind. The world is moving towards Online Shopping because we Millennials, Gen X and Gen Z, don't have time to go in stores anymore, we prefer to shop in the comfort of our own spaces (on our own time) anywhere in the world.

Henri Bendel has also made me realize, being complacent is never good! For years (123), they were a long-standing brand and they probably didn't make many changes because they were safe and people were used to their products exactly as they are.

As a Jamaican, when I see big name stores like this closing down, it makes me wonder if there is a real formula for success or is it fleeting? It also gives me a feeling of discomfort where I wonder "If they are not able to make it work in a 1st world country .. how will I? Only time will tell I guess .. only time will tell.

As we say goodbye to Henri, we must surely say hello to changes and thank you for the eye-catching black and white stripes you brought to the world and foe of course opening my eye to the world of luxury brands.
