5 Steps to get back on track after holiday indulgence


For many people, the holidays are the perfect opportunity to take a break from dieting and splurge on indulgent foods without the feeling of guilt. Nevertheless, since the holiday period is over, it is high time to start thinking about how to get rid of all the excess fat that might have appeared out of nowhere. Instead of negative self-talk, try being kind to yourself and commit to a plan that will get you one step closer to that perfect beach body. By following some of these steps, you will surely get back on track after holiday indulgence.


1. Develop positive thinking


It is natural and perfectly okay to relax during the holidays and take a break from your regular diet and exercise routine. It is completely understandable to devote this time solely to your family, enjoying all the joys that the holidays have to offer. Nevertheless, due to excessive binge eating and drinking, it is easy to fall into the spiral of negative self-talk and sometimes even post-holiday depression. Because of this, it is important to remind yourself as frequently as needed that things will get better, and gaining a bit of weight will not mean the end of the world. Instead of drowning in self-pity, guilt and anxiety, try to develop positive thinking. A great way to do this is to incorporate the practice of meditation into your daily routine. Focus on positive thoughts, and set up a game plan for getting back on track. After making a plan, be determined to stick to it.


2. Sweat it out


The best way to boost your mood after a period of overeating and drinking is to go hit the gym as soon as possible. A good sweat session of at least 30 minutes will get your heart pumping and your body moving. If you are not a fan of the gym, then opt for daily walks in nature or maybe go for a run. Whatever option you prefer, it is key to get back on track with your fitness routine. Promise to yourself that you will be persistent long after you get rid of the post-holiday belly bloat. Exercising has a lot of health benefits, such as alleviating back pain and making sure that heart disease is at bay.


3. Eat a lot of greens


Do not fall for detox diets that promise quick results. Diets such as the watermelon diet simply do not work long term. Instead, base your diet on whole foods and try to incorporate as many vegetables and fruits as possible. Vegetables such as kale and cucumbers are packed full of nutrients that your body desperately needs after the post-holiday period. If you find yourself short on time, or you do not feel like preparing something at home, then search for an affordable muscle building meal plan. 4. Water, water, water


Overeating over the holidays can leave anyone feeling bloated, lethargic and overall horrible. One of the best ways to reset your body is to drink a lot of mineral water to make sure that all the toxins get flushed out. It is known that consuming a lot of alcohol can lead to severe dehydration and migraines. People who enjoy sipping on some tea should consider brewing chamomile or peppermint. Chamomile is excellent for the digestive tract, whilst peppermint acts as a remedy for an upset stomach. Whichever beverage you go for, make sure that it does not contain any sweeteners and try to avoid coffee!




5. Get enough sleep


Sleeping for at least seven hours every night is crucial for optimal hormone levels, as well as a fast metabolism. Christmas and New Year's is a time when parties are in full swing, so it is not uncommon to suffer from lack of sleep. Nevertheless, it is important to give your immune system the chance to rebuild itself. Also remember, that without proper sleep, the body is unable to function and this can lead to serious diseases. For best results, try turning off your electric devices one hour before going to bed, and you will wake up refreshed!
