5 Self-Care Strategies For Busy People You Need To Try

Wednesday, October 31, 2018

It seems we’ve never been busier. In the midst of balancing our job or even jobs, plural, our social life, family, and errands, it’s easy to forget to take care of our soul and mental state. And obviously, it should be the first thing to take care of, but we usually remember it when it’s too late (burnout, anyone?). Here are some strategies for busy people you need to try.

Be Present

This seems easy but is actually something many people fail at, without even realizing it. We spend time either thinking about the past (even if past means something that happened in the office that morning), or the future, near or far. But not living in the present moment is missing an opportunity to live your life as it is, and experience peace and calm right now. So stop and focus on the present, on crossing the road, on the sound of wind or your keyboard typing away.

Sleep Well

Sleep is one of the things we are likely to neglect when life gets busy; but the less sleep we get, the worse we will perform in every area of that exact busy life! Make sure to get enough sleep; if you struggle, try introducing a routine and going to bed at the same time every night. For more serious sleep problems that persist, please talk to your doctor. Sleep is crucial for your well-being and the ability to cope with daily life, stress, and everything life throws at you.

Find Hobbies

We live in a time when people are encouraged to turn their hobbies into a job, which is nice if you need an extra income, but that erases the whole point of a hobby: to do something you like just for yourself, and relax and unwind in the process. If you have enough space at your home, you should try gardening. Tending to your plants, helping them grow, and enjoying the way your garden looks is definitely one of the biggest stress reliefs you can find – all thanks to staying outdoors, breathing in fresh air, and being physically active. So plan out your garden, think about specific plants and herbs you would like to have, find affordable but reliable gardening accessories and make sure your garden can grow in size. Having a garden can seriously help you deal with all types of stress and anxiety – is there a better reason to start planning and planting today?

Exercise Regularly

Again, when life is busy, some people will have a hard time designating a few hours every week to hit the gym or a running trail. But you shouldn’t, because working out is one of the purest forms of taking care of your mind and body, keeping you healthy and providing a stress release. When you run, you just cannot think of anything else than conquering the last mile, and your problems are at bay for at least half an hour. So all you have to do is find an activity you like, and then do it several times a week. It can be as simple as walking around your block, or dancing in front of MTV hits. Whatever makes you move and isn’t a burden!

Be in Touch with Your Emotional Self

Sometimes we just do and go about our day without stopping for a check in with ourselves. If it goes on for too long, we don’t notice the accumulating stress or creeping feelings of depression or anxiety. Don’t ignore your feelings, however easy that is; it will just eat you up around the corner, at the first sight of weakness. Allow yourself to feel them because you’re just human and humans do feelings. Take the time every week, if not every day, to see how you are feeling – and what you can do to feel better.

Self-care is not just long baths and browsing through the magazines – though it can feel nice at times as well. Self-care is literally taking care of yourself, inside and outside, as you would for someone you love. So please love yourself. Start today.
