How To Master The Minimal Makeup Trend

Friday, September 21, 2018

After burning-red eyes and bold lips, natural minimal makeup is getting back in fashion. No wonder, since it’s something that everyone can pull off! Indeed, it can be achieved on all skin tones, face shapes, and facial features, so whatever your natural features – you can look amazing with the minimal makeup.

Here is how you can truly master this trend for either day look or the next big night out. Oh, and since it doesn’t require elaborate blending and contouring, this is actually a huge time saver. Being equally beautiful as before, but spending less time and effort to achieve this? Bingo!

Prepare Your Skin

Minimal makeup looks best on healthy, glowing skin. So to make sure that yours is the best it can be, apply any makeup only after you’ve finished your daily routine of cleansing, toning and moisturizing. And then give your skin some time – five to ten minutes – to absorb all the nutrients you’ve just given it.

Prime

Various makeup artists don’t agree on this one step, so we’ll leave it up to you to decide. Some say you shouldn’t skip applying a primer, that will hydrate your skin even more and cover up the imperfections you might have. Others disagree and advise primer to be used only underneath heavy makeup that needs to stay on for a whole day or night. Maybe your best bet for the minimal makeup is using a BB cream, an all-in-one product that even gives a light coverage.

Conceal, But Try Not to Cover

Makeup addicts will find this one step to be hard. And indeed, the point of the minimal makeup is to look nude and give that fresh skin effect – not to have a thick foundation. Use a concealer under the eye area and anywhere else you might need it, such as your forehead, chin or on the nose. On the other hand, if there are parts of your face that need more help than just a tap of a concealer, you might want to apply a lightweight foundation with an appropriate big brush. Try to use as little as possible.

Keep the Cheeks Natural

Of course, you want some blush; but don’t overdo it, the goal is to look as if you’ve just finished a sweaty workout (minus the sweat). Some suggest using a cream blush instead of a powder blusher, as its structure is more resistant to higher temperatures, and it’s also absorbed better into the skin. Others advise applying powder blushes in a sweeping motion that will give the skin just the right amount of color.

Keep Your Eyes Bare

Here comes the easy part: to keep eyes minimal, you just need a mascara. If you feel bare, you can add a light matte eyeshadow ranging from beige to peach colors. And if you truly want to minimize the products you are using for this look, or downsize the time needed from start to finish, you can always invest in good eyelash extensions that will give you the needed effect, but without applying mascara every time. Not to mention rubbing your eyes to remove it when you’d rather jump into bed!

Let It, Shine, Let It Shine

Of course, we’re talking about the highlight. This is the fun part! Spread a cream highlighter over your cheekbones, under your brow bone, to your cupid’s bow and the inner-corners of your eyes. If your skin tones are lighter, use a pearl highlighter; if you’re on the darker side of the spectrum, opt for bronze or gold highlighter. You’ll get a beautiful natural glow.

Don’t Forget the Brows

Brows can be the standout feature in the minimal makeup – make yours never go unnoticed. Clean them up and use the spoolie brush to set the hair in place. Then start filling them – but not with a pencil, because that will make them look too defined. Use the eyebrow gel or wax, and that will keep the brushed-brow look in place throughout the day and night.

Finish with the Lips

To finish off the whole look and make it perfect, apply a skin-toned matte nude lipstick. The best results you’ll get if you enhance your natural lip color with a nude lipstick that has a little hint of coral or pink. Other colors that can pass: peach, soft rose.

And here you go! You just created a “no makeup” makeup, and doesn’t it look so good?
