introvert
noun
ˈɪntrəvəːt/
  1. a shy, reticent person.
adjective
ˈɪntrəvəːt/

Introverts are naturally quiet people who prefer their own company in the comfort of their own homes. If you are anything like me, you would probably be classified as an extroverted introvert as because of this Blog I have to go out and make acquaintances but this is something I had to really be intentional about trying to fix. For the rest of Introverts out there who are probably reading this post to get tips on how to overcome your situation, you’ve come to the right place!

Read below our very own “The Haute Lifestyle Guide for navigating events as an INTROVERT

Only Go where you’re Invited

If they didn't invite you, don't just show up thinking you are going out of your "comfort zone". Situations like these can cause an introvert terrible anxiety--imagine showing up uninvited to a private party then the host turning you back in front of a crowd of people. This could set you back for years and you have always had that memory of public humiliation.

Bring a Friend

One way you can ease your way into conversations at events is by going with a friend—it’s best to go with an extrovert or someone who is more comfortable making conversation than you and have them lead the conversations. What this does is remove that dreaded knot you get in your stomach when you have to talk to a new person. Think of the friend as your wingman or wing woman and simply play on whatever they say.

Find the Right Spot

Most introverts will get tired and overwhelmed from speaking with a lot of new people so finding a quiet place will help you to rest and relax a bit. I like to find a seating area where there is at least one other person so I get that time to myself and casually meet a new person. If this gets too intense or crowded, don't be afraid to leave. You are in full control.

Have something to Talk about

Always start with a compliment or ask where the person is from and what they do! Other great conversation starters are current affairs, the weather and a brief introduction of yourself and what you do.

The worst thing you could do is literally stand there with nothing to say but the old age “smile and nod” trick, be engaging and engaged in the conversation. Check out the latest issue on Social Media and use that to start the conversation.

Practice in the Mirror

Ever had a big speech or presentation and practiced in the mirror? This is the same principle! All you have to do is look at yourself in the mirror as you say the things you plan to say at the event. This is great practice to make you more fluent in your speech and it helps you to see what you look like while saying it. This method has helped me so many times especially when there are specific influential people I want to speak with and I don't want to have that weird dead silence during mid-conversation.

Being an introvert is not as bad as you think it is --as it relates to making conversation at events, it takes a great deal of practice to make it perfect. We hope this guide will help you to be more confident.
