Lubica Kucerova (born 27 April 1983), also known as Lubica Slovak, is a Slovakia born fashion designer, Ryerson University graduate and founder of LUBICA, clothing company based in Jamaica.[1] Lubica's early childhood influence was her grandmother who was a seamstress.[2] She debuted her self-titled fashion line Lubica in Toronto at the LG Fashion Week in 2005 and has created several collections under her brand: Blue, Bliss, Bloom, Toucan, Trinity, Beyond and Dream.[3] The Lubica line includes bikinis, resort contemporary women's wear wear and is inspired by the tropics.[4] Lubica is also recognized for her partnership with international recording artist Tami Chynn in opening a female boutique named Belle in Kingston, Jamaica[5] and also their collaboration in designing the award winning Anuna collection.[6][7]

H.P: How did you get started in Fashion Designing?
LUBICA: I have always been very creative from a young age. I used to draw and paint non stop everyday. My grandmother was a seamstress and I used to take her left over fabrics and tie them together and make dresses out of them and put on little Fashion Shows for my Grandma and my Mom. Growing up I always dressed different from my friends , it was obvious that I had an eye for Fashion. However , when it was time to go to University, stubborn me did not choose Fashion right away. I studied something else for two years at the University of Toronto. I didn't make it so I quit , not knowing what I was going to do. During this break from school ( which lasted about 6-8 months ) while I was in Slovakia picked up a Crochet hook and yarn and taught myself how to crochet and accidentally made a triangle  ( I was trying to make a Scarf ) And I thought to myself that if I can make another triangle like that, I can make a Bikini and so I did it ... and the rest is history. I ended up making Bikinis for all my friends and I was asked to do a little Fashion Show in Toronto and Stylists used my Designs for shoots and everything just happened by itself. So then it only made sense that I would study Fashion Design at Ryerson University in Toronto.

H.P: Describe your "Creative Process"
LUBICA: My creative process all starts with a feeling… usually because of music. I listen to lots of different music while I work and usually there is one song that does something to me , I listen to it over and over and over again…. And I daydream and I get ideas about what clothes I want to make next. I usually use that song in my show music then and it sets to mood for the whole collection.

H.P: What motivates you on a daily basis?
LUBICA: I love what I do. I really enjoy being in my studio, listening to music, and working on my designs. I am in my own little world. Its almost like a meditation for me at times. It keeps me sane. And then I love making women feel beautiful… there is no better feeling than
when a clients puts on her outfit and her face lights up and she just feels amazing because of something that I made for her.

H.P: Why did you choose Jamaica as the home for the " Lubica" Brand?
LUBICA : I used to live in Toronto for a long time. And although I love Toronto, I couldn’t manage the winters and always wanted to live somewhere warm. I had Jamaican friends and I started to come to Jamaica often and always had such a great time here. After I finished
university I was just going to come here for about 6 months and decide what do I want to do next…. Well, I am still here…. Lol I almost feel like Jamaica chose me… Its strange but it just always felt like home to me.

H.P: Tell us about your latest "Fever" Collection
LUBICA: It is called Fever because it is hot!!!!! Lol and also because if you ask any of my friends what’s Lubica’s favourite song right now they will tell you “Fever”,… hahaha however, that song did not inspire this collection. I just thought it was the perfect name for it. My Collections kind of reflect how I feel at the time… and I am feeling sexy! Lol I haven’t done swimwear in a very long time so I wanted to get back to what I basically started with. The collection is not only swimwear alone tho. I wanted to make one piece swimsuits that cover and help "camouflage” the body areas that maybe we want to hide a little but at the same time be very sexy and accentuate woman’s curves. I wanted to make swimsuits that are so hot that women would want to wear them as outfits (as bodysuits paired with pants etc). And also create clothes that are just simple and sexy and don’t look like you trying too hard…. and that when a woman wears them she feels super fierce and sexy.

H.P: Finish the sentence ... "If I was not a Fashion Designer , I would be a/an ...
LUBICA: "If I was not a Fashion Designer , I would be a/an ... I have no idea…. Lol probably a nutritionist or I would own a café or something else that has to do with healthy lifestyle and beauty. (but I would still be making clothes on the side even of just for myself… 😃

H.P: What words of advice do you have emerging Fashion Designers?
LUBICA: Make sure you can not live without fashion. If you are
always designing in your mind and always sketching and creating and always coming up with new ideas then maybe you can manage being a  fashion designer. But if you have just little doubt then be dentist.
Lol you know what mean…. And once you decide you want to be in
fashion make sure you work on your business knowledge as well
because in the end you will need that even more than your creative
talent. Don’t forget Fashion is a business and you will need to know how to sell your Designs. Otherwise , Fashion will only be a Hobby to you.
