Life After the Catwalk : Andy Cummings

Thursday, June 4, 2015
Mission Catwalk is the top Fashion Show on local T.V and across the Caribbean. The success of this show has set the stage ( pun intended ) for many talented Designers , hoping to break into the business of Fashion.

"Life After the Catwalk" features the contestants from past seasons of "Mission Catwalk" . Haute People has caught up with 4 of these contestants and would like to share what they have been up to after the show. Today we'll be catching up with the Season 4 Finalist contestant Andy Cummings who hails from Guyana.

H.PWhat was it like living in Jamaica for those few months?
A.C:  Going to Jamaica for the first time I was extremely excited to go and see the little rock and  the home of the  reggae legend Bob Marley  and the fastest man in the Caribbean Usain Bolt that was not all while there, I realized that all the Caribbean countries has a uniqueness about them.I had the chance to see the some of Jamaica music artistes and some of the best visual artists in the Caribbean and the chance to see great art work from the sculpture park of the Caribbean at the university of technology Jamaica. The propose that I was there for was to compete, but I feel like it was a little vacation and I enjoy it from food to the warm welcome  of the people  and the wonderful country getting to what I love at a regional level was truly amazing it’s like I had an obsession with Jamaica nevertheless I would  never regret a piece of it. Hopefully, I will go on a vacation and take some time out of my busy days to go back to Jamaica

H.P: Where do you get your inspiration to create your designs?
A.C: Where I grow up has a lot to do with influence and inspiration as it relates to my work as an artist. Growing up around a natural environment I was forced to love the flora and fauna of my small community in Berbice Guyana and that had a big impact on my life as a designer. My inspiration mostly comes from nature but as I get more mature in the industry my social life as some say on my work in both art and fashion I believe that my eye is open to new possibilities and I am concerned that my vision are the fruits of my imagination, there are days where I wake up with some of my best ideas. Hence the award winning collections with concept: Blue intensity story of lust love and like I often remember some big designer that inspire me as well.

H.P: What is a typical day for you like ?
A.C: My days can be extremely busy; work and more work . I would normally plan my day before I get out of bed and then put together the thing I would need to get my work done for the day. I then go to my new work room where I spend half the day to get some customers work done and I would spend the other half of the day doing illustrations for my other designs. At 6.00 pm I would have a two hours meeting with my youth group and have discussions or I would invite someone to  give a talk or we do other projects in the community. Then I go to meet with planning committee  for the new Berbice Fashion Weekend . Sometimes my days are extra-long because I still have to deal with customers.

H.P: What is one thing people can identify you with from the show?
A.C: Well I can say that I am very passionate about my dear land Guyana and doing the show. Most of my pieces I would talk about Guyana so I think that one thing would remember me for is being my country lover fashion designer I know there is a lot more that they can remember but that is the most outstanding one I can remember there was days when the other designer and even cast member beg me not to say Guyana again because I would relate everything to Guyana so that so that the other designer would get a feel of what my home Guyana is like .

H.PHow has the response been in Guyana ?
A.C: Guyana  is a country that like winners but although I did not win I was the first Guyanese designer to make to the live final show of mission catwalk in season 4. It's all been a dream come true for me getting to be an ambassador for my dear land Guyana but most of all getting to wake happy since I am back and don’t have to be afraid of being a that no one knows the response in Guyana has being great not what I expected it to be but more as a result of mission catwalk I find myself having more customers than what I had before and I had the opportunity to have three small bands for our republic day celebration mashramani. Today, I hold an award for best designer for small band full costume and I am also getting to do costume for pageant queen that have to represent Guyana regionally and internationally.

H.P: Any upcoming projects?
A.CI have a lot of projects planned; first is my biggest new baby girl Berbice Fashion Weekend  and this will be the first ever in Berbice Guyana as a little boy growing up there was not many things to do but with so much talented young person here and no chance for them to shine so berbice fashion weekend will give them that chance. My new 2015 Resort Collection that is in the Design stage will be out soon. There isalso my youth group I've named Union Shine this will be the focus of our energies in the community and empowering youth and help them to show their leadership qualities.
