Fashion vs Style

Tuesday, June 16, 2015
There is an expression here in Jamaica that goes "Fashion ova Style", I think it was coined over 10 years ago when I was in High School by a popular artiste at the time. I was at a Fashion & Finance Seminar last week and that same expression came up again and I've realized that people have no idea they are two different things. Below is how you can tell the two apart.

fashion
ˈfaʃ(ə)n/
noun
  1. 1.
a popular or the latest style of clothing, hair, decoration, or behavior.
    "the latest Parisian fashions"

Fashion is anything that is in season or the latest things being worn by a mass of people. Right now , the popular thing seem to be skinny distressed Jeans and those really long structured Coats/Jackets.

style
stʌɪl/

noun
  1. 1.
a particular procedure by which something is done; a manner or way.
    "different styles of management"

Style is when you take what is popular and add your personality and "zest" to bring it to life. One person might wear the Skinny distressed Jeans with Heels , a button down shirt and statement accessory piece; while another person might pair it with a white shirt and a pair of Vans.

It is interesting to note that most people tend to link Fashion with negative attitudes;super expensive clothing , super skinny models , b*tchy people , stuck up and so on. Did you know you can have the most Fashionable outfits and still look terrible? The trick is to not jump and purchase something that is in without adding your own personality and also thinking about your own body type. I for example haaaaate those tight stretchy one piece suits which are fashionable now simply because I don't think they will look good on my body type.

Fashion can be fun as long as you don't get carried away and add your personal style to it!

How would you define your Style?

  1. There is a definite difference between style and fashion. I like to think I have a sense of both.

  2. I agree that you have to look at fashion and decide if a trend is right for you or not.

  3. I love these definitions and I certainly see the difference! I like that - about doing what we want and not caring what others think!

  4. Oh that looks good. I've never tried salmon the smell has always turned me off but I'll be honest- this looks great! And worth trying! - Jeanine

  5. What a fun post to write! I really loved the fashion photos! If only I were that skinny again, LOL! (The shoes are to die for!)

  7. Lol. It was Bogle (RIP) who came up with "fashion ova style" way more than a decade ago. I never did grasp what he was saying and maybe because it was coming from him.

You are absolutely right about thinking twice before wearing every current fashion. This is for the men, I don't like seeing chunky fat men in the draggers pants/shorts; you know those three quarter sweats that have elasticated foot. I think slim guys wear them best.

  8. For me it's all about comfort. Sure I like to look like I am wearing fashionable clothing but most times I am not. I am sure I need a makeover! LOL

  10. Ugh, I wish I had some sort of style. I tried for a bit to come up with some great outfits, but between you and me, I don't know how to put prints and styles together. LOL... So I have lazy style.

    1. For Prints I would say wear a solid color, usually one that is included in the print. If you are bold enough; wear diff prints but in the same color group

  12. Finally in my 30's I am absolutely sure of my style. I love Lauren Conrad but she does have some clothes that are rough. I can take her line and make it my own.

  15. You are so right. Just because it's fashionable doesn't mean it will look good on someone! I try to mix it up between classic style and funky brights!

  16. Okay that quote is so perfect! A great attitude is the best way to stand out too!
