Up Cycling D-I-Y

Tuesday, July 15, 2014
The Up cycling Fashion trend has seen an increase in popularity since the early 2000’s and is seen by many in the innovative fashion circle as the next big thing. Up cycling generally refers to taking an item of clothing that is old, worn out or no longer in use and transforming it into another item (garment/accessory). Some people think that “up cycling” and “recycling” are the same thing but the main difference seems to be that with clothing the process generally adds more value, luxury or innovation to something that was basically garbage worthy.

As a part of today's article I wanted to share a simple yet Haute example of Up-Cycling that I found on THESHOESTRINGCONTESSA and THECRAFTINGFIEND. It basically involves taking a basic Tank Top and adding a simple embellishment to take it to the next level.

THE BUDGET FRIENDLY EMBELLISHED TANK

You Will Need :
- Scissors
- Fabric ( any colour you have available)
-A Basic Tank Top
-Needle and Thread
- Embellishment : we will be using a flower for this post

STEP 1

Cut flower petals of 3 different sizes (medium, large and small)

8 large petals (4 in tan and 4 in white) --this is the base for the 2 larger flowers
16 medium petals (8 in tan and 8 in white) -- these are the middle section of the large flowers, and make up the smaller one
2 small petals

STEP 2

Sew the petals together using the larger ones as the base then medium then small and then on to the tank in any way you want to here are some ideas below of the possible finished product.

Haute Tip: Instead of using individual petals sewn together try using one long narrow strip of fabric cut vertical slits along the length and roll if forming a flower. Attach that to your tank and enjoy!
