Dreams , Goals and of Course Resolutions

Monday, December 30, 2013
Hi Guys! 2014 is just days away to many of us that means absolutely nothing ... to others like myself it means I get one more year to accomplish new goals. At this time of the year it is not uncommon for people to make resolutions of things they hope to do in the New Year ... Others set goals both realistic and unrealistic.

Times are hard and some people got so depressed last year that they feel like there is no hope for the new year. My thoughts and words of encouragement to people who feel this way "Once there is life, there is hope" ... It sounds corny but i want you to really think about this. For some miraculous reason you are still alive which means there is something you can do. Instead of thinking the worst think positive. Sure that's easier said than done because there are some of us who have truly lived a full life and had bad experiences which leads us to think this is it ... "I will always have a bad life". For 2014 I challenge you .... make a list of the things you truly want to accomplish for that year that means something to you ... not your parents , significant other or boss or whoever ... you! It can be something materialistic like getting quality weave or getting a Michael Kors Watch or something more substantial like going to University, get a better Car or House. I want you to set that goal and really work towards it. The road to accomplishing your goals will be hard and you will want to give up but push! Let 2014 be the year you become a better Y-O-U!

Thank you all so much for the support throughout the year on this Blog and like I've been doing since i started this Blog, I will thank you all individually in a special post with your name:-)

What NOT to Wear to the Airport

Tuesday, December 24, 2013
Hi Guys! I trust you are all in high spirits ... there is so much emphasis placed on Christmas but remember its only 1 day. Today, we'll be looking at things to never wear to the airport. The Christmas Season is what they call "Peak Season" in the Travel Industry, therefore Airport is FULL. People are going to extremes to dress up for their flights. However! Less is more. Here are things you should not wear to the airport.

Too Much Accessories: Ladies and Gentleman, there is no need to wear every accessory in your collection. Security measures change quite often and you will have to take them off at each check point and please also think about the people behind you each time you go through the metal detector and there is a "beep" or you have to take them off one by one.

A Belt: Again, this will set off the metal detector and will have the people behind you totally peeved! Think about all the times you will have to take it off and put it back on. If you must wear a belt, wear one that is plastic or made of fabric. Spikes are all the rage this season but stay away from Belts with excessive hardware.

Flip Flops: This kinda depends on how far you have to travel and also how committed you are to walking with an extra pair of socks. Think of all the germs on the airport floor and how many people pass through on a daily basis. Ewww

An Underwire Bra: Ladies, this one is for you. I know sometimes we might want to feel extra sexy and need that extra push underneath but the wire will set off the metal detector and you will be there wondering why you keep setting things off and you will be sent to the back room for further security checks.

Layers of Clothing: Yes its Christmas and "farin" is cold. However if you pack on the clothing .. again you will have remove "all a dem". Also stay away from clothing with metal or padding of any form. These will be a huge hazard.

Remember to carry travel size items of your favorite products in your carry on or handbag. Other wise you will have to discard of them or have them checked.

International Reggae-Dancehall Artiste Rseenal di Artillary "Ready Fi Tek It" is a Big Hit

Monday, December 16, 2013
International recording artist Rseenal di Artillary, the acclaimed “lyrical artillery” of the Dancehall, has just released a single featuring a sample of The “Gaza's Don and Lyrical Genius” Vybz Kartel. The song which is titled “Ready Fi Tek It” racked up overnight many listens on iTunes literally hours after it was posted. Based on the rapid, positive feedback the producers decided to place the track in a listening session amongst some very harsh music critiques who all overwhelmingly said that this song has both top local Chart & international mainstream potential.
“Ready Fi Tek It” was produced by Kareem Goodison & Fada Scur of Orange Hill Records & Makonnen of EZ-Mak Entertainment with distribution Worldwide by Orange Hill through iTunes. The song was arranged with the Vybz Kartel's Sample, from his recently released track "Wi Have it Lock" produced years ago by Sam Diggy Music. Rseenal deliberately orchestrated this track in solidarity & support to "The Teacha" who is currently battling several charges in court to date, with an aim to entice & rally Jamaica’s dancehall fraternity, the Caribbean & North American markets to support the relevance of both these artiste to the genre of dancehall music while seeking to make an indelible mark in the business.

Mixing & Mastering was done by Makonnen who has done work for established acts such as Lil Wayne, Sizzla Kalonji and Capleton. Recording was done at Iyah Gift's One Hart Music Studios.
Rseenal have done the official music video for “Ready Fi Tek It” and is now having it edited with the hopes of getting it out to the public in approximately one week. The video was directed and edited by Jahdean Van Gogh's Jah Workz & Yosef Imaginations.

What to Wear To Meet The Parents : The Christmas Edition

Hi Guys! It's just one more week until Christmas ! I'm excited yet kinda disappointed. I feel like as people we spend a year preparing for one day that goes by really quickly. Today's topic is kind of a touchy one. Congrats to all the couples who have made it to this point ... meeting the parents. Here are a few tips on what to wear on that special day.

Guys

The most important thing is to make sure you are properly groomed. Please ensure that you went to the Barber before hand and get yourself a hair cut, line up and a proper, proper shave. Not one of those butchered looks that leaves your face in stubbles and band- aids. Stay away from tight "You're a Jerk" Video looking pants.

There are nothing wrong with wearing fitted pants that is the right fit for your body ( now ) not a 12 year old you. If you are wearing Jeans, make sure the colours are subtle. And please, buy a belt! There should be no swagging or hanging of your pants on that day! It is important to show the girls father that his daughter is with a decent, responsible man. As it relates to accessories or in guy terms "bling" keep those at a minimum. If you wear earrings, get a pair of small knobs, keep anything that says your name at home. Also ensure your shoes are clean. They can tell a lot about you just by your shoes.

Girls

Ladies, I'm sure that we all have an image of what we would like to wear when we first met his parents. For me It's that scene from Monster in Law, where charlie is wearing a beautiful Pink Dress that's not too tight or modest .. its just perfect.

You can go for that route or wear something that looks nice that you are comfortable in. Try to stay away from elaborate hairstyles, those can be for the club ( later on). Make sure your hair is neatly combed whether weave or natural. Stay away from 5 inch heels at this time. I know there are ladies out there who are great at maneuvering heels this height, but this can leave a bad impression on the mother. She's a woman just like you are she thinks things .. just like you. For accessories, keep them at a minimum. Stay away from noisy pieces like bangles or huge earrings and anything that contains derogatory statements like "B**tch*

We all have different personalities and styles and of course different parents. The few tips I've given in this post can serve as a guideline, but is not limited to the things I've named.

The Worst Christmas Gifts Ever!

Wednesday, December 11, 2013
Hi Guys! Last year I did a Gift Guide for the Fashionable Girl. Read it HERE, where I basically gave guys an idea of the gifts you should by for the Fashionable lady in your Life. This year it is the total opposite. I'm gonna talk about some of the worst gifts you could possible give to someone.

A Donation in your name: Yes Christmas is known as the Season of Giving and its always great to help out a person in need (once you have good intentions) I don't know about anybody else, but this "gift" feels like a slap in this face that says "hey , I'm not gonna give you cash in hand because you are never getting my money". I'm all for the idea of it , but that gift can be given some other time.

Socks: There are people out there still giving socks! unno stop it! Its completely ok if you live in a cold climate but what about people like me who live in Jamaica? What am I suppose to do with socks? I can understand if I was still going to school because back then you can never have too much socks. But! I don't need it now.

Oversized Photos ... of other people: Why would anybody want a large photo of somebody else to hang in their house? Why do you have a large photo of yourself anyway. I'm talking about photos the size of Agnus in "Matilda" (90's people know this movie) Everybody loves photos, but if you feel the need to give somebody a photo of yourself consider a 5"7".

Gift for Pets (and not the owner): I love animals and I have no problem with them. Why would you give my Dog a gift and not me :-(  lol seriously though

Fruitcake: I personally don't like fruitcake but I've heard people say its delightful. However, I don't think something like that travels well, let's say a person got a Fruitcake and has to take 3 buses home ... how would that work on the bus? Do you put in your bag or ask a person who is sitting to hold it for you?

Obvious Knockoff Pieces:There is nothing wrong with wanting a nice quality designer piece after a year of bills and expenses.Whats not nice is getting something you thought was designer to have it fall apart days later or have somebody point out its fake. Guys especially, if you are going to get us something nice make sure its the real deal.

I'm a firm believer in "Its the Thought that counts" however that also means you should think about the gift you plan to give a person. I'm really happy with just getting something ... but please make sure you take what i like into consideration.

What is the worst Christmas gifts you've ever received?

How to Dress (Appropriately) for a Christmas Work Party

Monday, December 9, 2013
Hi Guys! Happy Monday .. top of the morning to you! Its December and its the month of Office Parties. Gone are the days when people would wear their work clothes to the Office Party. People have "turnt up" the Office Party Dress Code. However, there are things that are still inappropriate.

Things to Never Wear

Excess Cleavage: Not because its the end of the year it means you and all your parts are to break free. If you decide to wear something low-cut , make sure its well above your navel or wear a cover up.
Too Short / Too Tight Clothing: Leave this for the club! Maybe you have plans to hit the club after the event, why not skip the Office Party and go straight to the club?

See Through Garments: Highly inappropriate. Sheer has been popular this year but it can be subtle.

Heavy Make-Up: There is nothing wrong with wearing a full face of Make-up but its how you apply it. If you are not sure, go to YouTube or ask a friend who knows how to apply Make-Up to do it for you.

Things to Wear

DO wear clothing that will flatter your shape. Work clothes can hide all that. To the single ladies , maybe you've had your eye on a guy all year. Now is the time to stop him in his tracks by wearing a dress that fits you without looking like a hoochie.

DO wear sensible shoes. Stay away from those "Lady Gaga" type heels. Make sure you can walk firmly without tipping over.

DO make sure your hair is freshly done.Too many times I've seen ladies well dressed and the hair is a mess. This is your one shot to relax and forget about papers on your desk. Make the extra effort to ensure your hair is right.

This is not a fashion related tip but if there are alcoholic beverages, try to limit yourself. There is no need to get so drunk that you are not standing in an upright position. Also, like with any party there will be music, dancing is always fun and a great way to relieve stress. But leave the "Bump & Grind" to R.Kelly

I really hope these tips help at least ONE person. I know by now in Jamaica most of the hype Christmas parties have passed  but for all the others. Have fun ..

The Haute Girl On A Budget : Buying Clothing

Monday, November 25, 2013

Hi Guys! Happy Monday! We've reached a new goal as you can see if you look to the top right of this page. Thank you all so much for your viewership :-) Today we'll be talking about shopping for clothing on a budget. Whether you are a Fashionista or not, you need clothes. By law it is highly recommended that you wear clothes in public just for your safety and everybody elses.  Here are a few tips to have you looking "Haute" without breaking the bank.

Shop at "alternate"places: Here in Jamaica, if you are looking for a good deal on a Budget, your best bet will be to head Downtown Kingston or Cross Roads. You can find anything from a pin to an anchor downtown depending on the street you go on. If you are overseas, try an Outlet Mall. Most of these places might be a bit out of the way in terms of the distance, but if you plan in advance, it will be beneficial to you.

Buy Essential Pieces: There are certain pieces you need to have in your wardrobe that are considered as "essential" If you invest in these pieces, they can be transitioned into creating many looks by simply pairing them with other items. Click Here to see those pieces.

Use the 70/30 Rule: 70 % of your wardrobe should be classic items ( items that are considered timeless and will not go out of style ) The remaining 30% should be Trendy Items ( items that are hip and in style) You don't need to spend a lot on trendy items because they go out of style really fast and you don't want to have them taking up space in your closet.

Re-cycle/Up Cycle Clothing: If you are into thrifting visit a Thrift shop and you will see items at a ridiculous low cost. In Jamaica, you can visit the Salvation Army store downtown. Another great way is to re-cycle by shopping from your mother's / grandmothers closet. Fashion repeats itself so you are sure to find something for FREE in your mother/grandmother's closet that can be of use to you. Up-cycling involves you taking an old item and adding various trimmings/ hardware to make it look new again. You can add studs to an old T-Shirt or Bleach a pair of pants.

Know When To Buy: There are certain times of the year when clothing is cheaper ( except in Jamaica ...lol ) Anyway, I find that things are cheaper in April since not a lot of people are shopping then and also Summer since its "Back to School" time. Never "shop shop" in December unless you are rich which would defeat the purpose of Shopping on a Budget ..lol . Seriously though, Retailers know that most people will be shopping at the end of the year so the prices are always high. Its always best to shop earlier in the year for deals. If you are in the states, Black Friday is a good time to buy everything you need for the festive season.

Artiste on the Rise : Yola Moi

Friday, November 22, 2013
The Jamaican Music Industry has been getting a lot of attention worldwide due to some of our very talented artistes. This year Music powerhouse Tessanne Chin made her musical debut on "The Voice" and was well received worldwide. The Jamaican music industry is becoming dominated by females. Today, Haute people introduces Artiste on the Rise "Yola Moi" , when she is not kicking it in Martial Arts , she is kicking it on the tracks.

H.P: What Inspired you to get into Music?
Y.M: I've always had a passion for performing and entertaining, whether it be, singing or dancing, and I've always known that nothing would give me greater pleasure than making music that people could relate to, and selling that music by delivering fully loaded performances through which people can connect with me and my music.

H.P: How would you describe your sound?
Y.M: Honestly, there is not just one description for my sound, I have many different sounds. I've done songs in a variety of genres; reggae, dance hall, dub step, pop, R&B. You might hear me just singing on a reggae/pop/r&b track and then you might hear me deejaying on a dance hall/reggae track even on a pop track, i just love to mix it up, so you never know what i might come with next. For now though, look out for all dance hall, all reggae, might just surprise you with a pop, but as I say you'll never know.

H.P:What would you say is the one thing that sets you apart from other upcoming Female Artistes?
Y.M: I would say apart from the fact that I record many different genres of songs, I believe that when it comes to performing, I will make that triangular connection between three parties: the audience, the music and myself, the artist. I feel it's important for the audience to feel you, through the music; if I'm happy, they're happy, if I'm sad, they're sad, if I'm in a dancing vibe, i make them wanna dance. It's all about the control of emotion, being able being able to turn somebody's bad day into a good evening and that is truly what making music is about.

H.P: What is the one thing you could see yourself doing for the rest of your life?
Y.M: Well obviously performing is the one thing I would love to do for the rest of my life.

H.P: Finish the sentence ...." I cannot live without my ...
Y.M: I cannot live without my phone. It's loaded with music, has a camera and connection to my loved ones, three most important things for me.

H.P: Any upcoming Projects?
Y.M:Yes, definitely, i have a collaboration with Busy Signal, dropping hopefully by next week, so everyone should look out for that. The song is called "NUH WINE DISCRETE" one of the dancehall songs i said you should look out for, definitely gonna hear me spitting some lyrics in this. Mahd Mahd Ting! and you know Busy always on top of his game.

H.P:Where can fans find your music
Y:M:You can find my music at www.facebook.com/YolaMoi

Also follow me on instagram and twitter@yolamoimuzik

Beauty Boxes

Wednesday, November 20, 2013
If you are an avid Magazine subscriber, Beauty Lover, Fashionista, YouTube Watcher, then I'm sure you must have heard about the Beauty Box. A Beauty Box is simply a Box which contains Sample size beauty Products from popular or new brands.

The idea of the Beauty Box is that you pay a monthly fee (subscription), fill out a questionnaire based on your individual preferences then those products are sent to you each month. I know what most of my fellow Jamaicans are thinking "afta wi nuh live a farin , how wi a guh get dem sumn yah". Well if you are one of those people who like to sample products before committing to purchasing full sizes, then Subscribe to a Beauty Box. You can do this by registering with a Courier Company like Mailpac Express or Union Express, and then it will be sent to you :-) Below are some of the most popular Beauty Box Subscriptions.

Ipsy:  Founded by YouTube Beauty Guru Michelle Phan. $10 per month gets you samples of products from Benefit, Nyx, Sexy Hair etc. The great thing about this subscription is you not only get top of the line products, but! You get a really nice bag.

Glossy Box: $21 per month gets you 5 surprise Luxury Beauty Products. Items are delivered to your doorstep . This box is relatively expensive but the brands they carry are worth it. There is also a referral program where you get $10 for each friend who signs up.

Julep: I have been seeing this commercial a lot on T.V . This is one of the few Beauty Box subscriptions that i can say have gone "mainstream". This box is for the Nail Enthusiasts as they feature brands from their own line as well as other popular hair and skincare lines.

As I've stated initially, the Beauty Box phenomenon is relatively new in Jamaica , however why not give it a chance? It a great way to try new products and also support the beauty industry.

The Haute Girl on A Budget : Hair

Monday, November 18, 2013
Happy Monday to you all ... Haute Girls all around, today its all about hair. During Biblical times, a woman's hair or hair in general was seen as a woman's greatest asset, it was seen as her crown and beauty. Here in Jamaica the hair industry has skyrocketed to becoming a Million Dollar Industry. This means as women we are heavily invested in hair. Times are hard but as women we still want our hair to look good. Here are budget saving tips for keeping your hair "haute" in these times.

Do it Yourself: Whether you have natural or processed hair, weave wearer or non weaver there are brands that have several at home kits that doesn't require you to be a professional in that field. Brands like Softsheen Carson have various lines that are great if you are looking to "D-I-Y".

Optimum Salon Haircare Home Kit
Kits like the one shown above is very easy to follow, it comes with instructions and some even come with numbers. If all else fails, visit the free University a.k.a YouTube.

Bargain with your Stylist: If you have a really great hairstylist that you visit often and trust, why not ask her for a discount?  Or bring your own products? I like to bring my own products to the Salon ( yes I'm cheap ) but that's a few extra bucks saved. I bring Shampoo, Conditioner, Treatment anything I have at home that she uses i bring! This way you are only paying for her time and style rather than everything.

Invest in Quality Tools/Accessories: Ladies natural or processed , you are gonna need certain tools and accessories to maintain and lengthen your style at home. Buy a quality Flat Iron, preferably one that you can adjust the settings based on your type of hair and simple things like hair-scarfs. Most hairdressers will tell you that you that all you need to do is wrap and tie your hair.

Outre tie on top hair Bonnet (Left) Goody Mosaic Head Scarf (Right)
Find A Friend: There is always that one friend who does hair at home and will be more than happy to do your hair for free or at a discounted price just because they love doing hair. Please note unless your friend is an actual Hairdresser, they will not have all the products at their disposal so the onus is on you to find the products. Another great idea is to find a friend/ family member enrolled in a Cosmetology Program and volunteer yourself to be their test subject. This is a win-win situation . You get a free hairstyle and they get extra practice.

These are all the tips for today. If you have any way you save money on hair, please share them in the comment section below. If you find the comments section too annoying with the verification code, e-mail your comments to hautepeople@yahoo.com and we'll feature your comments on the Facebook Page.

Artistes on the Rise : Yuriverse a.k.a Ginegog

Friday, November 15, 2013
This is another exciting feature for the month of November , where we will feature Young , Fresh Jamaican artistes or artistes from the Jamaican Diaspora. Haute People is a lot more than Fashion and Beauty, we are a Lifestyle Brand. Music is a major part of our Jamaican Culture. This week we have in "studio". Yuriverse a.k.a Ginegog , Executive Director of Head Corner Stone Music. Yuri is a past student at the University of the West Indies where he holds a B.A in Communications and is currently pursuing his Masters in Tourism & Hospitality Management.

Yuri was recently featured on CVM AT SUNRISE where he speaks about his career and love for music.

H.P: What are 3 words people use to describe you?
Y.S : Unique , Persistent, Spiritual

H.P: How did your love for music come about?
Y.S: Music is one love …a divine union of soul and purpose…me love music and appreciate it and music love and appreciate me…. Music has always given me an expression of and for life. When I look back I can see that Music is not what I do but who I am,  my spirit really; you can’t see it but you can feel it, I am that, I am. Even from I was very young my playing was playing music by beating on pans, desk etc and singing songs and writing lyrics, it is my joy. I grew up playing and chanting dub poetry to deejaying, then to sinjaying always finding another way of expressing myself musically in getting a positive message out. At a tender age in the 80’s my brothers who were sound system selectors took me to parties and gave me the microphone and people would look in awe at the words, sounds, and  power that I expressed and to me there is no other way to be.

H.P: Tell us about the concept of your first music video?
Y.S: The concept of my first music video was an inspiration from the most high. It is for the song called “I love you” I wrote that song in 3 mins and recorded it in 7mins the riddim spoke to me and I spoke back and it was just like pure spring water flowing from the stream after that. The concept of the video is more metaphorical than what most people see. When people watch the video they talk about a love story but what they don’t see where the love come from and what is keeping it together. So instead of telling you what you see I will tell you what some might not have seen…and that is through the expression of his soul a young man writes a Love song about a vision he sees of his soulmate. He sends out the energies in song to the universe the universe response through the laws of attraction and nature and brings him and his soulmate together which appears accidentally. Even though their energies connect their flesh and socialization interrupts their union. Eventually nature and destiny takes over and makes their appreciation for each other  stronger and stronger and they become one but even after that, they are  challenged by their  individually vices either be it by jealousy in the case of the female and fleshly desires in the case of the male. However these challenges which are seemingly vices to pull them apart help them to overcome and become stronger together as they grow and looking forward. Basically my concepts are based on my inspiration and my inspiration is my life. And my life is based in nature’s simplicity but complexity.

H.P: How do you stay inspired to do music when its described as a"saturated" Industry?
Y.S: Music is bigger than an industry and music cannot be saturate or contained. It is like air!  Just as there cannot be too much air there cannot be too much music. Expression is expression. The term industry is what people use to show that music is being controlled or because they want to control music. This is a false idea used by the greedy to keep out the strong and abuse the weak. The idea of saturation can be compared to the idea that the earth is over populated which is ridiculous because there are a lot of empty spaces on earth where there are no people are living just as there is room for growth of more genres and style of music.

H.P: What is your "Dream Job"?
Y.S: I don’t dream - dream is what people do when they sleep or wish to become something they are not. I am myself and wish only to be myself in my full capacity spiritually and materially balanced. However I vision… so I envision myself forever contributing to the positive growth of all people of the world in love through the most powerful art form: word, sound, and power. Being a scholar, actor, writer, poet, director and entrepreneur I also envision using these talents to create, grow and empower not just myself but all people who embrace goodness.

H.P: What can fans/supporters expect from you in coming months?

Spray On Lotion

Wednesday, November 13, 2013
This is definitely not a new phenomenon but i think more attention still needs to be given to this Beauty Invention. The Spray On Lotion's application is similar to any other spray product... you shake a bottle , spray the top and product comes out.

Vaseline Spray & Go Lotion - Click to watch Video

What Makes It Special?

Nothing really. According to manufacturers: its quick, convenient and absorbs in seconds as compared to the traditional lotion. Personally, I don't have a problem with traditional lotion I actually even think this Spray and Go is quite cumbersome. You spray it and you still have to rub it into your skin for it to absorb. With traditional Lotion, you quirt a little in your palm then rub it all over your body. Lotions can be tricky where texture is concerned but its not rocket science, if you have a lotion that is watery, squirt only a small amount.

To Buy or Not To Buy

If you like trying new beauty products, its great to add to your collection because of its sleek design. If you are looking for a product to truly improve your skin its also great to have around. This is not a must have item as it is not new but more of an upgraded lotion. It all depends on you and what you like. I've tried the Vaseline Spray and Go in Aloe Vera and i liked it but I'm not inlove with it and its not something i would re-purchase, because i have the regular Vaseline Lotion.
