Accessories : Gaudy Rings

Wednesday, September 26, 2012
Hi Guys , Today we'll be looking at "Oh My Gaud" pieces that were made popular on Style Networks' Jerseylicious.

For those of you who are not familiar with the "Jersey Style" , Its LOUD .. Its BOLD .. and Totally in your FACE!!. This trend was made popular by the effervescent "Olivia Blois-Sharpe" on Jerseylicious on Style Network. She works as a Make-Up Artiste at "The Gatsby Salon" as well as the newly opened Anthony Roberts Salon , then on her own ( you have to watch the show)  to understand ..lol

I actually looked up the definition of Gaudy and it says " Showy in a tasteless Vulgar way". a gaudy costume; a flashy ring; garish colors; a loud sport shirt; a meretricious yet stylish book; tawdry ornaments.

These Rings are definitely not your ordinary rings , they are of animals , plants , food and any random thing you can find that's BIG , BOLD and BLINGY.

When partaking in this trend , the age old rule applies "Less is More". These rings make a statement all on their own. They are so huge and colorful . It depends on your personal choice and style of course. It takes a very special person to wear these rings .

Do you Gaudy Rings are Tacky or Fashionable?

Office Style: Giving Your Uniform "Personality"

Monday, September 24, 2012
Hi Guys ! Happy Monday .. I hope you all had a great Weekend . This is also the last week of the BLOG..A.VERSARY GIVE A WAY ... THERE IS STILL TIME TO ENTER !!!!

In Jamaica , it is not uncommon for us to wear a uniform, whether to School or Work . A uniform is a form of identity that signifies a form of oneness and that you belong to a specific institution or company . Quite often , as it relates to wearing a uniform , there are always strict rules . Today , i am here to show you how to give your uniform an "Identity" and not look like one of the Robots working at a Factory .

Gossip Girl "Uniform"

The picture above is from one of my favorite T.V Shows , Gossip Girl . They are wearing uniforms , but they've added their personalities to it. Sure this is a fictitious show .. and these are the "Rich Kids" , who get to wear what they want . The point is ,you can still add some personality to your boring old uniform.

The company my Step Sister works for recently changed the design of their uniform and with that change came a whole new set of rules which even includes a Crest .. yes a Crest or a "Chest Plate" as i called it in High School . She decided that while she wants to follow company rules , she also wanted to have her own personality . Here is what she did:

Accessorized !!!

She bought belts , watches , broaches and handbags that would go with the uniform

As i always say , accessories can change any outfit , Dramatically . Be careful when it comes to "Work Accessories" , go for subtle rather than "loud" . Stay away from "noisy" pieces and also handbags that have excessive hardware . I talk about this alot .. but i want you guys to get it . As for the belts , i would recommend a "Skinny Belt" rather than those big Broad Chunky Belts .

Shoes

She bought different work shoes to match each uniform . When it comes to Shoes in the work place , i say Go Bold or Go Home!! Literally . This era has brought us so many different colors and styles. There are the  traditional rules that still apply like :

  • No Open Back ( Sling Backs )
  • No Open Toes ( Peep Toe)
Be sure that the heel you select is work appropriate . While you want to be attention , be sensible . It would not be smart to wear 6 inch Stilettos to work .

Put  A Cardigan On it!

Geo , recently did his post on The Cardigan and also explained that it is a timeless piece and so many looks can be created from it . If you wear a dress to work , you can wear a cardigan over it in a complimentary color . This will create a more sophisticated "Girly Look".

Accessories : Mixing Metals

Wednesday, September 19, 2012
Hi Guys ! There are certain rules in Fashion like "Never Wear White After Labor Day" , or " Don't Mix Gold with Silver" . The thing i love the most about Fashion is that it is dynamic . It changes over time.  popular trend is "Mixing Metals".

Mixing Metals involves , putting together "opposing pieces" , such as putting gold with silver , brass with Rose Gold and so on . The whole point here is to put pieces together that people deem as a big Fashion NO-NO. If you are one who follow trends and know how to Spot trends , you would have realized that this was very popular in the 80s . I for one love watching those really old comedies ( some in black and white) because i love the way the people dressed in those times and also how those looks have been "re-vamped" today to fit our times.

One such show is Apt 227 with  Jacke'e Harry. I can't find the exact episode but there was one where she has two necklaces intertwined that was Gold and Silver and i thought it was sooo ... "Chrome". Check out the picture above to see this trend :-)

Beauty Obsessions : Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain / Lipstain + Balm

Tuesday, September 18, 2012
Hi Guys! Today we will be looking at another Beauty Obsession that is "sweeping " the Nation :-)

If you haven't already guessed it from the title , Today we will be looking at the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain and also Lipstain + Balm. I know most people are under the impression that they are one in the same. Trust me , i was fooled too . They are actually two different products . I think there was another lip product or a line of lip products that were launched a little after Twilight became popular , hence the whole "bitten" thing.

What They Are

They are both lip balms that have a certain degree of color to them  , however they are not as pigmented as traditional lipsticks . Unlike lipsticks , they contain moisture ( which is the balm)

Why The Beauty Industry Loves it

Since there are two products today , let me break it down for you

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain

  • It is Lightweight . Since it is not Lipstick , it goes on smooth and light , it doesn't have that heavy , bulky feeling that most Lipsticks have when applied.
  • It leaves lips instantly moisturized . 100% of women who used this product expressed that their lips felt instantly moisturized with just a "stain" of the lip balm.
  •  It is a retractable Chubby Crayon that does not require sharpening.

Revlon Lip stain + Balm

  • This is a two in one product. One end has the lip balm , the other end has the lip stain . The Just Bitten Kissable Balm stain on the other one has the balm built into the product . So its one product  , that does two things , while this is one product that does two separate things ... confusing ... but it took me some time to get it too.
  • It is "Kiss- Proof" . It is guaranteed that you color will stay in tact after smooching :-)
  • It has a nourishing balm for supreme comfort.

* If You've tried any of these products , please share your experience*

Office Style: Casual Friday

Hi Guys! Picture this  ... You've had a hectic week , it's Thursday evening , you get home stare at the clothes in your closet and all you see for tomorrow is your "Office Shirt" . You think to yourself .. "what can i do to stand out at work tomorrow?  Have no fear confused worker ... I am here to bring bliss to your wardrobe woes :-)
There are some of us who believe it or not dread "Casual Friday". Then there are some of us who welcome the day with open arms as they get to "Dress Up" and wear Jeans! I seriously will never understand the fascination with wearing Jeans to work on a Friday ... but i have some tips on how you can look stylish yet professional .

There are certain "Staple" pieces that one should have in their wardrobes , regardless of your gender . These are :

  • A Blazer
  • A Button Down Shirt .
Blazer

Guys , invest in at least one good Blazer . You can get sooo many different looks and of course multiple "wears" from it. I know the average males hates to shop and when  they do , it has to be for a purpose . As i said , you will be able to wear your blazer for a lot of events. The model in this pic has decided to pair his blazer with a dress shirt and tie , this is a typical "Casual Friday" for a more "Fashion Forward " Male.

Another look you guys could try , is the "Rebel without a Tie" shirt look . Simply wear one of your dress shirts .. without a tie  ! Try wearing an inside shirt and undoing 2 buttons ... slick and cool . Dress that up with cool shoes and be sure to match your belt with your shoes .

Button Down Shirt
When making reference to Wardrobe Building , i always talk about a "Button Down " Shirt. This is a timeless piece that says "classic and sophisticated" The good thing about this is that it can be worn with jeans or dress pants/skirts . While it is a good idea to invest in a quality solid color button down shirt , try to shake things up by wearing one that has different prints and colors . Our Fashionista  above , pairs her top with blue True Religion Jeans and open toe gladiator heels.

Dress Up that blazer Girl! I've seen a lot of women rock their "Work" Blazers with a nice pair of jeans , a dress shirt and really cute shoes . There is absolutely nothing wrong with that . Try to make it look more casual since you are wearing a work blazer . These days , Blazers come in so many different colours and prints . If you are a daring fashionista , why not try a different colour blazer such as pink or blue? I would recommend staying away from those bright bold colours . Well it depends on the type of Industry you work in . If you work in the creative industry... go crazy with colours . You can even wear you "company shirt under your Blazer :-) You look stylish and you are not getting into trouble with H.R :-))

Also ladies , instead of Jeans  , try wearing a cute casual dress . Be sure that the one you wear is exactly at the knees or at least 2 inches below the knees . You are still at work after all . If you opt for a sleeveless dress , wear a blazer or a nice cardigan to keep it professional .

When it comes to dressing up on "Casual Friday", still be mindful of the fact that you are still at work and should therefore adhere to the dress code . However , there are always ways you can tweak your clothing to make sure you stand out while still following the rules.

Behind The Seams : For My Girl's Hair And Skincare

Thursday, September 13, 2012
Today , Haute People goes "Behind The Seams" with Tia-Sonya Shackelford of the quaint Etsy Shop , " For My Girl's Hair and Skincare( For Girls , Teens and Women). There are sooooo many hair and skincare products for adults and very few for young girls that will motivate them to take care of their hair and also be proud of that hair. For My Girl's Hair and Skincare is a line of products developed for girls and women .

H.P: How did you get started in this business?
T.S: I actually got started in the business a few years ago when my daughter, Anana was experiencing severe hair breakage. I was eager to find natural solutions to re-grow and reconstruct the damage; and from there, For My Girl’s was created!

H.P: Your Target audience seems to be Young Girls , why did you choose that particular group?
T.S: I chose this particular group primarily because of my daughter. In observing her and girls her age, I discovered that most girls do not have the necessary tools to care of their own hair so I wanted to create healthy products especially for them.Products that will resolve a lot of the problems they have such as brittle or damaged hair; dry hair, hair breakage, or hair that is difficult to grow.
- Another important reason for me choosing this group is...I discovered that many young girls are not aware of healthy hair and skin care regimens/products available to them.

H.P: Explain to us the process that is involved in creating a specific product .
T.S: The process includes the following:

  • First identifying or researching what kind of hair or skin care needs people have (i.e., hair loss; skin moisturizer) etc.
  • Then, gathering natural products that will match benefit that need.
  •  Lastly, I create a recipe or formula that will help promote or treat that need.

H.P: What is your Skincare regime?
T.S: My Skincare regime is pretty simple: I actually use my own Face Cleanser, which is gentle and healthy for my skin and I also use a gentle skin moisturizer.
- Twice a month, I may also use a sugar scrub to lift away dead skin cells or for rejuvenation purposes.

H.P: What are some of the benefits of using natural and organic products?
T.S: Natural ingredients are safe for your hair. Organic products are simply better for your body
-Organic products will not leave harmful chemicals or build up on your hair and skin. Instead, they work to heal and revitalize them.

H.P: Finish the Sentence ... i cannot live without my .....
T.S: Raspberry Ecstasy Body Lotion! It’s light-weight, smooth on my skin with a silk-like feel and has a breath-taking fragrance!

H.P: Where can we find your products?
T.S: My products can be found on the following websites:

Yellow Energy Nail Polish!

Wednesday, September 12, 2012
I bought this Nail Polish over the weekend because i was intrigued by the color . I went home painted my nails and was extremely disappointed ! First of all , it goes on really light and it doesn't show . 3 coats later , i saw it faintly .

Sunday afternoon i was out in the sun and boom! Yellow energy came to life! Lo and Behold , Sunday evening it started to peel off . I went on the Jordana website to see if they had tips on how to apply it and i didn't find that particular color but i found one really close . It was recommended that for best results and longevity , apply two coats of base coat . Did that Sunday night , by Monday Morning one peeled off . I guess i have a love hate relationship with this color.

Have You Tried this specific Nail Polish ? How was it for you ?
